Garden Gazette July 2021

A big hello from The Children’s Garden School to our dear Garden families! We hope this message finds you well and enjoying summer family time.

While it seems like we’ve just said goodbye to our graduate Honeybees, the start of the 2021-2022 school year is just around the corner. See School Information for Start of School tasks, important dates and more.

The sounds of The Garden are different this month as the sweet song of children’s laughter is replaced with the roar and clatter of construction as our new playground takes shape. Much thanks to Andrea Shull, Garden mom and board member, for overseeing this project. For more info and pictures, see our Playground Update.

The bunnies spent some time in the airconditioned school during our recent heat wave and have since enjoyed a bunny run created by Teacher Brook. Ruffles has really enjoyed this time out of the hutch burrowing holes.

The Garden staff have been busy both at and away from the school. See our Staff News for pictures and messages from the staff.

Cohort Planning
We hope you are finding opportunities to get together with Garden friends from both sides of the parking lot over the summer. Cohorts are part of our safety protocols as we move toward the start of the upcoming school year with COVID as a prominent consideration in school safety planning.  In creating cohorts, the complex task of honoring parent preferences, respecting existing relationships and the prioritization to nurture the uniqueness of each child has been on the forefront of class planning this summer. Your teachers are taking these considerations into account and applying their understanding of your child as an individual and group learner as they continue to form the cohorts for the 2021-2022 school year. Please note that, unlike this past year, all teachers will be moving freely between and spending time with the two class cohorts throughout the week. We will let our families know in August how our groups will start out the year and explore our options for integrated groups as the year progresses.

Playground Update

As many of you know, our current playground has been awaiting large-scale overhaul that was over three years in the making.  We are thrilled to report that the demolition and re-grading of the old playground is complete and our new outdoor shelter area has been constructed!  The new multipurpose shelter includes an addition for covered play at our beloved mud kitchen as well as an updated sandbox area.  The installation of a brand new social slide beside the tree house as well as Teacher Debbie’s legacy musical garden have also been completed.  A new tire swing is also on the books for installation in the upcoming weeks.
A huge thank you to Garden mom, Andrea Shull, for championing this project from start to finish with the lead of alumni mom, Erin McCullough.  From the initial research of safety codes to spontaneous emergency site visits for equipment placement (with cookies in hand!), Andrea and Erin have given countless volunteer hours to the success of this project.  Thank you also to all of the families and friends who made this project possible through their generous donations to The Garden’s annual auction fundraisers.

Staff News

When not stopping by the school for classroom prep or cpr training, the staff has been spending some lovely summer days with friends and family. Read on for a brief message from each staff member.

Hi Everyone! I hope summer is treating you all well! I have kept very busy the last few months taking a crash course in the art of parenting two! Holy Smokes! Eddy and Coco have been teaching me a lot- and I am looking forward to this fall to reconnect with my preschool friends- but also so my son Eddy can join the Ladybugs class! In the meantime, we are keeping busy with visits to parks, playing in the creek, reconnecting with family, potty training and naps.

I look forward to seeing you all soon and hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!

Hi everyone! I hope you are having a wonderful summer with lots and lots of family time! I am filling my summer with family and friend get togethers. I kicked the summer off with a few days in Denver visiting my daughter, Samantha. John and I had a big family get together on July 4th, with his siblings and their families that we haven’t seen since the beginning of Covid, as well as our kids that live locally. I just heard that the Canadian border is opening up on August 9th, so I am madly racing to book a flight back east so that I can visit my sister and brother in Western New York and head up into Toronto to visit my oldest son, John, whom I haven’t seen since January 2020! At the end of August, I’m looking forward to spending a few days with my dear friends and co-workers at our staff retreat on Hood Canal. We spend the time curriculum planning, a little performance and program reviewing, games, crafts and a lot of laughing – returning to school refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to begin our school year!

Hi CG families.

I feel that summer days can be like raising children.  The minutes go by slowly but the weeks go by so fast.  So far I have had wonderful summer break.  I started it off by going up to Western University to celebrate by older son Joshua’s graduation.  Josh is continuing on to do his Masters in Computer Science at Western so he feels like it is just another regular summer.  My husband and I just visited our younger son Luka down in San Diego last weekend.  He has a summer internship working for a construction Management firm.  He will head back to Cal Poly in the Fall to go to classes in person!  We also added a new family member to the Kovac house.  We now have an adorable Maine Coon cat named Monster.  He is little now, but should grow to be about 22 lbs and 3 feet long (nose to tail).  Oh my!  I leave in a few days to head down to Santa Cruz for a family reunion and then up to Truckee to relax at our 400 sq ft. tiny cabin.  It sure has been an fun summer and I hope all of you are having a fun and safe summer.

Hello Everyone,

What a fun and busy summer!  Hope you are all enjoying your time.  Our family has been very busy with soccer which has taken a lot of our time.  We were able to enjoy Sunriver as a family which was so fun!  We are leaving soon on a road trip taking our oldest to Arizona where he will be attending his second year of college.  We are hoping August slows down a little and we are able to relax a little more and enjoy the rest of summer.  Looking forward to seeing you all in September!

Hey all!
I hope you’re all having a lovely summer and really taking advantage of this incredible weather! I have been so lucky to be able to spend some lovely quality time (at long last truly face time face!!!) with some of your and your littles! My wonderful chosen family of friends, Shona, Hannah, Knicole, Dom, and Theo, and I have adventured our way through summer starting with a group trip across the state to visit Dom and Theo who moved earlier this year for their final year of college. In mid July I went camping at Mt. Rainier with Shona and Knicole and we got to enjoy the peace and serenity of the mountain, it’s creeks, and it’s seemingly endless fields of wildflowers as we got lost on the windy mountain roads. Shona and I are looking forward to helping my dear friend Hannah drive down to LA to move into her home for the next year! We’re having lots of fun planning our exploration of the city for the very first time later this august. I have also, of course, enjoyed time with my actual family, with my sister in Michigan having just finished her masters degree, and my grandma choosing to stay safe in Arizona, my parents and I continue to be left to our own devices. Together we have been doing a lot of relaxing with our adorable little kittens who aren’t so little anymore, and our big kitty Max. I have been looking for an apartment as I am hoping to officially move into my own space this fall! I will be wrapping up summer with my wonderful friends on staff with a retreat to the Hood Canal. I am so excited to spend some quality time with the garden ladies and prep ourselves as well as curriculum for the fast approaching school year. I can’t wait to see you all on your first day of class!!!

Hi Everyone,

I have been enjoying these summer days with a great balance of work and fun. I am excited as we prep the Garden office for a technology update and have enjoyed watching the progress on the playground.

These sunny summer days have provided lots of fun driving time behind the wheel of my favorite little car. My family has enjoyed our little kitten pair as we receive heavy doses of cuteness throughout our days. Most fun has been reconnecting with family and friends in ways that we haven’t been able to since pre COVID times.

Can’t wait to see you all when school starts and don’t hesitate to reach out to me anytime!
